Conditional Sentence অর্থ শর্তমূলক বাক্য। এই জাতীয় বাক্যের একটি বিশেষ বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো এতে ব্যাপকভাবে Modal Auxiliary Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই জাতীয় Sentence Complex Sentence হয় এবং এর একটি কাজ সংঘটিত হওয়া বা না হওয়া ঐ Sentence এর অপর একটি কাজ হওয়া বা না হওয়ার উপর নির্ভরশীল বুঝায়; অর্থাৎ এর এক অংশের ক্রিয়ার সংঘটন অন্য অংশের ক্রিয়া সংঘটনের উপর নির্ভরশীল।
উদাহরণ—
1) If you come, I will go.
2) If I were a bird, I could fly in the sky.
3) Had you done that work, I would have punished you.
* এই জাতীয় বাক্য মূলত মাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চমাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষায় Completing Sentence আকারে ও অ্যাডমিশন পরীক্ষায় শূন্যস্থান পূরণ আকারে এসে থাকে। যেমন—
i) If you came my home ________________________.
ii) If you have worked hard, you _____________ succeed in life.
a. could b. would c. could have d. could be
♦ প্রকারভেদ ও গঠনকৌশল:
Conditional Sentence তিন প্রকার। একে শর্তযুক্ত অংশের উপর ভিত্তি করে প্রকারভেদ করা হয়। নিম্নে আলোচনা করা হলো—
1. Present Conditional : শর্তযুক্ত অংশটি Present Indefinite Tense হলে তাকে Present Conditional বলে। এর অপর নাম 1st Conditional.
নিয়ম: Present Conditional এর উপর নির্ভরশীল অংশটি Present অথবা Future Indefinite Tense এ হবে।
গঠন: 1st Conditional + shall/ will/ can/ may + verb এর Present form.
উদাহরণ— 1) If you love me, I will marry you.
2) If you boil water, it makes vapor.
3) If you permit me, I can do the work.
2. Past Conditional : শর্তযুক্ত অংশটি Past Indefinite Tense হলে তাকে Past Conditional বলে। এর অপর নাম 2nd Conditional.
নিয়ম: Past Conditional এর উপর নির্ভরশীল অংশটি কাল্পনিক ঘটনাকে বুঝায় এবং তা Past Indefinite Tense এ হবে।
গঠন: 2nd Conditional + should/ would/ could/ might/ + verb এর Present form.
উদাহরণ— 1) If you loved me, I would marry you.
2) If you did that work, I would punish you.
3) If you permitted us, we could do the work.
3. Perfect Conditional: শর্তযুক্ত অংশটি Past Perfect Tense হলে তাকে Perfect Conditional বলে। এর অপর নাম 3rd Conditional.
নিয়ম: Perfect Conditional এর উপর নির্ভরশীল অংশটি Past Perfect Tense এ হবে। এটিও কাল্পনিক ঘটনা বুঝায়।
গঠন: 3rd Conditional + should have/ would have/ could have/ might have + verb এর Past Participle form.
উদাহরণ— 1) If you had loved me, I would have married you.
2) If you had done that work, I would have punished you.
=> Had you done the work, I would have punished you.
3) If you had permitted us, we could have done the work.
Note: If, Had, were, when দ্বারা Condition বা শর্ত বোঝানো হয়। কল্পনা অথবা অবাস্তব ধারণা বোঝাতে be verb সর্বদা were হয়। বাস্তবে কোনো ক্রিয়া সংঘটিত হয়েছিল কিংবা শর্ত ছাড়াই কোনো ক্রিয়া সংঘটিত হয়/ হবে বুঝালে তা Conditional Sentence হবে না; সেক্ষেত্রে তা Normal Tense হবে।
Conditional Sentence এর আরও কিছু উদাহরণ:
1) Were I a doctor, I could treat you.
2) Had I much money, I would help the poor.
3) If you applied, you might get the job.
4) I will go when you come.
5) When the sun shine, the light sprays.
♦ Look: Conditional Sentence এ Principal Clause এর verb টি হলো নির্ভরশীল ক্রিয়া বা শর্তাধীন ক্রিয়া এবং Subordinate Clause এর verb টি হলো শর্ত আরোপকারী ক্রিয়া।
অনেকে Conditional factor এর সাথে Principal Clause ও Subordinate Clause এর বিষয়টা গুলিয়ে ফেলে। তারা Principal Clause টিকে মনে করে যেহেতু এটা সংঘটিত হওয়াটা অন্য অংশের শর্তের উপর নির্ভরশীল তাই এটা Subordinate Clause। কিন্তু এই ভুল করা যাবে না। একটি বিষয় পরিষ্কারভাবে মাথায় ঢুকিয়ে নাও যে এরূপ ক্ষেত্রে ক্রিয়াটি নির্ভরশীল, Clause টি নির্ভরশীল নয়। Clause স্বাধীন বা নির্ভরশীল হওয়া নির্ভর করে অর্থ সম্পূর্ণভাবে প্রকাশ করতে পারা না পারার উপরে, কোনো কাজ ঘটা না ঘটার নির্ভরশীলতার উপরে নয়। বিষয়টি এখনও তোমার কাছে পরিষ্কার না হলে Clause এর Lesson টি দেখে নাও।
এটি পরিষ্কারভাবে না বুঝলে সমস্যা হবে। Complex Sentence এর Tag Question করার সময় Tag Question করতে হবে Principal Clause এর। Subordinate Clause এর Tag করা যাবে না।
